June is Pride Month – a time to observe and show support for LGBTQIA+ people across the UK and around the world.It’s also a valuable opportunity to recognise the experiences of LGBTQIA+ communities and think about how we can continue building understanding.
For students, knowing they are accepted and supported can have a forceful impact. School or college should feel like a place where everyone can be themselves and where all identities are welcomed without judgement.
Pride Month can be a useful moment to pause and deliberate about what’s already in place and where there might be opportunities to strengthen your setting’s inclusive practice. This might involve exploring themes of diversity through the curriculum, encouraging open conversations, or assessing policies to make sure they reflect the needs of all students and staff.

What does LGBT+ stand for?
LGBT+ stands for Lesbian, Queer, Bisexual, Transgender, plus all of the other identities within the community. The community is celebrated all year round with LGBT+ History Month, Transgender Time of Visibility, Pride Month and more.
What is LGBT+ Pride?
LGBT+ Pride Month is marked annually in June, to celebrate the LGBT+ community. Pride Month began to commemorate the Stonewall riots, a series of protests for LGBT+ liberation, beginning on 28th June, 1969.
Many schools across the globe use Pride Month as an opportunity to educate young people on the history of the LGBT+ community and to celebrate all those within their school who detect as LGBT+.

The Stonewall Uprising of 1969 [Library of Congress]
In 1969, the Stonewall Inn was one of the most popular same-sex attracted bars in New York City. Throughout the mention it was illegal to serve alcohol to a gay person until 1966, and in 1969, homosexuality was still considered a criminal offense. This led many gay establishments to function sans liquor license, providing an open door for raids and police brutality. The Stonewall Inn was owned by the mafia, and as long as they continued to make a profit, they cared very little about what happened to their clientele. The police raids on lgbtq+ bars and spaces were not isolated to the East and West coasts, but were a phenomenon happening across the U.S. during this time.
The first Pride march was held on June 28 1970, the one year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. Primary sources provide detailed information about how this first Pride march was planned, and the reasons why activists felt so strongly that it should exist.
