Straight men movies
A lot of straight male reviewers look at Leaving Metropolis and have a real problem with it because they say there is no way that a straight man would ever fall in adoration with a gay guy. But having been in one of those relationships three or four times in my life I know it happens very much and I consider there is a level of denial and creature threatened that goes on with a lot of straight people, particularly men, and we need to overcome that. ~ Brad Fraser
Toronto playwright Brad Fraser wrote several plays about jaded 30-somethings sleeping with, mistreating and occasionally murdering each other. His perform has more heart than that of Gregg Araki or Brett Easton Ellis as he understands most cruelty comes from pain. A recurring theme in his work is the seduction of men who identify as straight.
This is a common fantasy in gay media, in both pornography and narrative production. (And Eating Out films which are somewhere in between). It usually starts in adolescence as closeted youth grow up with no other outlet for their desires. If it continues into adulthood it can be called experimenting or bi-curiousness. “Masc for Masc” or self-loathing. When it happens in films it’s usually calle
On Straight Men, Movie Comedy Teams and Belated Props for Abbott and Costello
Some thoughts I’ve been kicking around about the excellent movie comedy teams and the role of the linear man…
The genesis of this train of thought was a revelation I had the other afternoon (probably an evident fact to some of you) about what makes the Abbott and Costello movies unique and a way in which they improve (if perhaps don’t completely succeed). Their films are perhaps the most thriving attempts to integrate a certain nice of old-style verbal two-man comedy execute into a movie length narrative. This is simultaneously faint praise (when you come right down to it, there were very rare other attempts) and high praise (what they attempted was darn nigh impossible.)
When I say the attempts were unique , I mean they were rarer than you think. I am talking about something very specific. There were many kinds of comedy teams in vaudeville and burlesque. One of the most common had its roots in the minstrel show.** This was the comedy duo or double execute which paired a sillier comic with a straight guy or feeder, a guy whose occupation was to undertake the set ups for the punchlines delivered by the comi
“Friendships between gay and direct guys can be healing and uniquely satisfying for all involved.” ~ Michael C. LaSala Ph.D., LCSW. Psychology Today.
Gay men have befriended women in media for decades. Today I’m looking at films focused on friendships between gay and straight men. Most are mediocre. A few are downright unpleasant. But there are some gems.
The following reviews include mild spoilers
Coming of Age
Date and Switch (2014). Dopey straight Michael and vulgar gay Matty seek dates for prom (despite clearly pushing 30). Matty doesn’t like guys who proceed “too gay” so he starts dating a masc-for-masc jerk. Michael feels abandoned and spends the unwind of the movie moping. The film thinks these oafs are hilarious. Your mileage may vary. Wastes the talents of a strong supporting cast. C-
Heartstone (2016). Surly Icelandic teen copes with crushes, bullies, and an unhappy family. His sole defender is his gay finest friend who’s fallen in love with him. The gay friend is empathetic but he’s there to suffer and further the straight boy’s journey. The slow pace, thin plot and relentless gloom construct this one hard to sit through. Contains tr

Improv is not the identical as real conversation, and no substitute for a script!
Straightman is not without its merits, first and foremost the fact that it shows a thoughtful of gay man not usually seen on the screen, a blue collar, scruffy, fashion-clueless everyman. It also depicts a friendship between a straight guy and a gay dude which doesn't unravel when the gay friend comes out, but is instead greeted with a matter-of-factness that hopefully h

10. Monster (2003, Jenkins)
It may seem a petty off to launch this list with a film about a serial killer, as that may not be considered an especially positive portrayal of a lesbian. But I think the clip handles that particular aspect of Aileen Wuornos very adv, as merely incidental and not directly related to her mental instability, and just in general, the film actually paints a fairly sympathetic portrait of her character (almost to a fault, honestly). The most important thing about the entire feature, though, as far as I’m concerned, is that it boasts an unbelievable scene of Wuornos and Christina Ricci’s character discovering their lust for one another in a roller rink, put to Journey’s monumental Don’t Stop Believin’, which is easily one of the most romantic adore scenes ever lay to film. Click here to survey the scene on youtube.
9. Mysterious Skin (2004, Araki)
Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a gay prostitute and Brady Corbet plays an asexual who believes he was abducted by aliens as a youngster, and their stories eventually converge, and it’s revealed that they shared something deeply traumatic in their childhood. Araki tones down
