Southwest Pilot's Crude Rant About Flight Attendants Caught on Open Mic

June 22, 2011 -- A Southwest Airlines pilot was suspended without pay after his cockpit microphone became stuck unseal and an obscenity-laced rant about the physical attributes of flight attendants was broadcast across the entire Texas airspace.

Houston TV station KPRC obtained a recording of the audio in which the pilot bashed gays, women, "grannies" and overweight people. The conversation took place at about 7:30 a.m. CT on March 25 and was broadcast over the Houston air traffic control radio frequency, blocking communication between air traffic controllers and other pilots for more than two minutes.

On a flight from Austin to San Diego, the pilot first complained about flight attendants he worked with in Chicago.

"There's 12 flight attendants, individual, never the same flight attendant twice. Eleven (expletive) over the top (expletive), (expletive) homosexuals and a granny," the pilot said. "Eleven. I mean, think of the odds of that. I thought I was in Chicago, which was party-land."

"After that, it was just a continuous stream of gays and grannies and grandes

    NPR's 'ATC' gets same-sex attracted co-host

He wasn’t supposed to start until September, so I was surprised yesterday when Ari Shapiro began as one of the three co-hosts of All Things Considered, the most-listened-to radio news program in the territory, which airs on Dallas’ NPR affiliate, KERA 90.1 FM, from 4–7:30 p.m. daily. Shapiro replaced Melissa Block, who stepped down after 12 years alongside Robert Siegel and Audie Cornish.
The reason we care, other than creature addicted to National Universal Radio, is that Shapiro is openly gay — the first out host of the flagship program that we know of. It’s not like gays are rare on NPR, either nationally or locally, but this seems significant to us. Why? Adequately, if we didn’t assume that being a “gay journalist” was different than be a “journalist,” we wouldn’t work for a gay media company. And being out is crucial — it brings a perspective and challenges politicos and pundits to ponder about their words … or get caught up in what they speak afterwards. We might bristle if someone says “the homosexual lifestyle” where even a progressive wouldn’t … and we might then hold their feet to the f

Recap by KC Forcier, the 2018-2019 Graduate Liaison for the Art, Technology, and Culture Colloquium

"Roxane Gay: With One N" — Roxane Gay on Body Image, Social Media and Intersectionality

The Art, Technology, and Culture Colloquium kicked off its season of Fact & Fiction last Monday with Roxane Homosexual, an author who, as BCNM Director Nicholas de Monchaux observed, has “redefined the public intellectual for the digital age.” Gay’s body of work spans multiple media and genres: beloved for her powerful essays, Gay has also produced journalism, memoir, fiction, and recently became one of the first ebony women to creator a series for Marvel. On Monday, Gay read from her recent memoir, Hunger, described by The New York Times as “an intellectually rigorous and deeply moving exploration of the ways in which trauma, stories, desire, language and metaphor shape our experiences and construct our reality.”

After reading several excerpts from the memoir, Gay fielded questions from the audience on topics ranging from her process as a journalist and editor, to intersectionality, overcoming trauma, and what feminism will look enjoy in the 22nd century. The questi
