Brandon Flynn on Hollywood Double Standards and Never Actually Coming Out

Brandon Flynn has a flourishing Hollywood career. The 25-year-old quickly shot to social media superstardom on Netflix’s hit “13 Reasons Why” with millions of devoted followers and, shortly after, was cast on HBO’s “True Detective.”

And yet, the rising celestial body has received just as much attention for his personal life as his professional career.

In 2017, after posting his support on Instagram for an Australian bill that allowed for queer marriage, the media famous Flynn’s coming out story. The problem? He never actually came out as gay.

“Even though I didn’t ever come out to the public, in a weird way, I just one day read an article where I came out in the terms that they wanted me to come out,” Flynn says.

Through tears, Flynn, who feels supported by the industry in regards to his sexuality, says he’s thrilled he gets the opportunity to be a role model for “any gay boy at home.” But still, he struggles with the double common the media has placed on him solely because he has dated men.

At dinner recently, a acquaintance asked me about a book I had blurbed. He had recently picked it up after reading an article, ostensibly a review, of the manual. He asked me what I reflection, and I said that I had liked the publication. I found it funny and sharp and enjoyable. I’d read the publication during a strange and difficult span during the pandemic. It had been one of the few books I was able to finish during that time. I was quite happy that my friend was going to scan the book, because I was curious what he would make of it though I sensed that there would be things in it that he liked. Then my friend told me that the article about the publication had presented it as an alternative to contemporary lgbtq+ literature, and without it being explained, I knew exactly what kind of essay my acquaintance was talking about.
