The Gay Terminator

Nothing needs to be added to Kristian Lin’s review of ”Bruno” this week, but I have a few personal notes on watching the movie. As a lifelong gay feature fan who’s frequently been less than satisfied with “gay movies,” I smiled so hard my face was sore afterward. The production contains two or three of the biggest laughs I’ve enjoyed in recent memory – Bruno nearly convincing a would-be stage mother that her infant needs liposuction comes to mind. But shocked guffaws were just the cinnamon-flavored lip gloss on this movie’s vast kiss-with-tongue. What made me so joyful was watching Sacha Baron Cohen convert the perennial sissy target of “fag jokes” into a rampaging sissy Godzilla who terrorizes the landscape, grinding hapless victims under his giant pedicured feet. (There’s been much hand-wringing about Baron Cohen humiliating “innocent” people. My attitude is: If you’re at all concerned about how you’ll appear onscreen, then don’t volunteer to be filmed by a stranger’s cameras, no matter what line he feeds you).

Building bridges of understanding, letting your heterosexual neighbors know you long the same opportunities at happiness they have, choosing to discuss ins

Thanks to promo stills and paparazzi shots of Mackenzie Davis in bowl cut/dirty tank topped glory, many queer women I know have been eagerly awaiting Terminator: Dusky Fate for months. Davis, who gained dykon status for her role in “San Junipero,” Black Mirror’s gayest and sweetest episode, got jacked for her role as Grace, a robotically enhanced human sent from the future to protect Dani, a robotics factory worker living in Mexico. Having little to no previous interest in the Terminator franchise, I assumed that Davis’s arms would remain the feature of the movie. I would watch her clash some bad guys and win, and it would be satisfying, if not memorable. I did not expect to love it, and I especially did not expect Terminator: Dusky Fate to be so, SO gay.

Here’s a concise summary, if you haven’t seen the movie yet, which you should rectify as soon as possible: Grace (Davis) is sent to present-day Mexico to save Dani (Natalia Reyes) from a Terminator (Gabriel Luna), who has been sent to kill her. Why a Terminator wants Dani dead, and why Grace was

In my earlier essay about the Sapphic fantasy clip, when last I looked at Terminator: Dark Fate, I wrote this:

It’s fairly obvious, on that observe, that the “mommyzoning” scene, as fandom calls it, was a late addition to the script. It’s like someone at the studio got spooked that the palpable connection between Dani and Grace looked so absolutely romantic, so they threw in a clumsy last minute “no homo.” It didn’t really work, if the fandom (and the actresses) is any indication; the powers that be couldn’t halt us from rubbing our greedy gay* hands all over Dani/Grace. (And for that matter, either or both plus Sarah.)

Now, it was drift partner’s birthday this week, so at her request we watched Dark Fate again, because it’s a great film and she loves it aggressively. I couldn’t assist but look at the whole movie specifically through the lens of that conspiracy, that the scene where Grace (Mackenzie Davis) tells Dani (Natalia Reyes) that in the future “You saved me and you raised me and you taught me to hope” was a delayed addition designed to tamp down the potential lgbtq+ vibes, and I possess decided to collect the evidence in a post.

Hey little pinto beans, how are you? I am feeling so, so grateful for the folks I have in my animation. My therapist and I (yeah, this just might become the “my therapist” section, it’s gonna be okay) were talking about how easy it is to ignore the plethora of good in your life and focus on the one thing that isn’t going well and how active gratitude might be the key to changing that habit. So y’all, I’m grateful for you! I’m grateful that you read my minuscule ramblings here each week, I’m grateful I can find at least 10 good things each week to share with you, I’m grateful we possess this cutie pie site to be with one another.

I know I’m not supposed to be sappy until the end, so let’s do the brand-new before I start blubbering on y’all.

Terminator: Dark Fate Is the Gayest Terminator Yet

Last summer, when photos from the set of Terminator: Dark Fateshowed Mackenzie Davis sporting a fashion bowl trim, grimy tank highest, and massive deltoids, lesbian Twitter clueless its mind. Praise rained down from the internet’s thirsty queers, and I’m pretty sure some actual drool rained from my mouth. Davis was already beloved for her turn exploring lgbtq+ desire while mentally traveling through hour in the “San Junipero” episode of Black Mirror. In the Terminator shots, she’d become a full-on sex symbol.

The funny part is, Davis’ character, a mechanically enhanced human from the future named Grace, wasn’t supposed to be sexy at all. Davis told Vulture that she was involved in discussions about her character’s appearance, and director Tim Miller “didn’t want it to be sexy, and he didn’t desire it to be a sweaty male version of a warrior. He was like, ‘I don’t
