For much of golf’s extended history, the sport has been seen as a conservative and traditional game. The industry has struggled with diversity and inclusivity, both in terms of race, gender, and sexual orientation.

For instance, country clubs often have strict membership criteria. In fact, the number one ranked golf course in the Merged States, Pine Valley, didn’t agree to allow female members until May 2021. Absurd, right?

As a finding, even today, the sport is predominantly white male-dominated and has had limited representation from minority groups, such as those from the LGBTQ+ community. Love many other sports, golf has had its divide of discrimination and barriers for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Still, there are ongoing efforts within the sport to promote inclusivity, diversity, and steady values. The golfing collective has been working to break down barriers, expand accessibility, and create more welcoming environments for people from all backgrounds and identities.

In honor of Celebration Month in June, let’s take a look at some of the historic achievements made by the LGBTQ+ community in golf.

Golfing with Pride: Celebrating the LGBTQ+ Golf Community in San Francisco

In 2019, PGA Professional Greg Fitzgerald, alongside Tom Smith, General Manager and PGA Professional at TPC Harding Park, embarked on a mission: to build the first-ever Queer golf tournament. Speedy forward to today, their vision has evolved into a powerful platform promoting LGBTQ+ inclusion in golf, while providing an authentic trial alongside PGA Professionals.

Partnering since its inception, the Northern California PGA Section and The First Tee of San Francisco have continued to support this transformative event. In 2022, Topgolf proudly connected in as the Presenting Sponsor.

Len Dumas, Executive Director of the Northern California PGA Section, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "The Northern California PGA Section is proud to advance its support to PGA Member Greg Fitzgerald in his effort to promote inclusion in the game of golf and bring the San Francisco-area Homosexual community together for a fun-filled date to benefit a great cause."

Over the past five years, the San Francisco Pride Golf Tournament has helped boost more than $300,000 for SF Movement (a grant-giving management through its
