How 10 Punk and Metal Bands Support LGBTQ+ Rights

This year, as with many others, Pride Month comes around at a divisive moment in the Merged States. “Don’t say gay” and anti-drag bills threaten public life for gender non-conforming community members across the nation in states such as Florida, Tennessee, Texas — the list goes on.

Nonetheless, the month-long celebration of LGBTQ+ rights — commemorative of the 1969 Stonewall Riots — keeps the fight going as tenacious allies and society members come together.

Amid a rainbow of supportive Celebration Month voices, some of the loudest come from the punk and metal scenes, centered around sturdy pro-LGBTQ+ artists such as Otep and Against Me’s Laura Jane Grace.

Not only do these artists struggle for a safe vacuum for themselves, but for the throngs of homosexual listeners that call those scenes home.

With even more fans coming out to shows following the advent of TikTok sensationalism, musicians ranging from Jeff Rosenstock to Avenged Sevenfold are showing support in eclectic ways, creating an inclusive and safe space for queer community members.

Hello all and happy pride month! This year I wanted to put together an article listing out some of the LGBT+ musicians through the progressive music scene. It’s a resource that I’ve found is lacking in the genre, and what better thing to do than compile a list such as this for pride month 2021.

All of the musicians and bands have links to their music or merch stores. I more than encourage you to inspect out the bands, provide them a listen if you haven’t already, and then send some funds their way this identity festival month by buying their music.

“Kyros are a progressive and alternative rock and pop band based in London, England with our guitarist, Joey over in the states.”

“Having only recently come out as a trans female to an incredibly affirming and supportive fanbase, I feel absolutely honoured to be in such a unique yet privileged position of being surrounded by so many other talented LGBTQ+ mus

Homophobia, Hate, And Recent Heroes: The Tough History of Homosexual Metal

Early in the writing of this article, I stumbled across a ask on a RateMyMusic message board. “Any LGBTQI metal bands?” it read.

Merely two responses down, someone had provided a neat encapsulation of an attitude that has haunted the genre on and off over the years. “If you don’t want violent machismo demons and shit, maybe metal isn’t for you?” it read.

That was one of the dominant myths about the genre, once upon a second. Spawning from English rock and blues, spearheaded by bands like Black Sabbath, and, later, Judas Priest, metal was portrayed in the media as exclusively, and aggressively, male and straight. In turn, those attitudes would later sour and warp into some homophobic sub-genres, as lesser purveyors of metal dabbled in outright loathe speech.

Of course, there’s an irony in the way those cultural lies were established — by the ’90s, advantage singer of Judas Priest, Rob Halford, came out as queer himself. But those attitudes haven’t gone extinct exactly, either. As recently as 2013, pop-metal wastes of territory For Today took time out o

32 LGBTQIA+ Icons in Rock + Metal

Here are 32 LGBTQIA+ icons in rock and metal.

In honor of Pride Month and celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community year-round, we've compiled a gallery of LGBTQIA+ figures in rock and metal. Among the list are Judas Priest's Rob Halford, Queen's Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Halestorm's Lzzy Hale, Greta Van Fleet's Josh Kiszka and many others.

June is the commemorative LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, in honor of the Stonewall Riots that occurred in June of 1969. The uprising was in response to a police raid that occurred in Greenwich Village, N.Y., and is considered the single most essential event to spark the gay liberation movement.

Oct. 11 is National Coming Out Day, to encourage those who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community to share their real selves with others and for others to welcome it with love and acceptance.
