Chroma focuses on advocating for 2SLGBTQIA+ people in the Menahqesk / Saint John Region. As such, we host a number of projects aimed to support our members produce friends, learn unused skills, and/or creatively nurture their instinct of self within a community of like-minded individuals.

Chroma is a community company focusing on advocating for 2SLGBTQIA+ people in the Menahqesk / Sai

Mental health professionals propose psychotherapy to deal with gender dysphoria, minority stress, and coexisting mental health concerns, while also helping clients navigate social and medical transition. Additionally, they can provide WPATH-compliant referral letters for gender-affirming medical interventions, such as hormone therapy and surgeries, when required by health care providers or Medicare.

Meet Dusty Green, founder and researcher for New Brunswick Queer Heritage Initiative. We sat down with him to discuss the role of his organization, the challenges of archiving an under-represented community, and some of the queer history he has unearthed in New Brunswick.

What have you being doing since you graduated from Graphic Style at NBCCD in 2016?

“After I graduated, I did contract work for a little while, I was working at Moksha Yoga doing their marketing, and I was working at the provincial archives for a bit. When I was working at the archives, I came across some photos that really caught my eye because they were strange. They were photos that would have been from WWI, from an internment camp in Amherst, Nova Scotia. There were a surprising number of men in drag in the photos – like POWs in mop top wigs and dresses. It didn’t look like a traditional internment camp. They had acting clubs and gardening clubs. It was very, very strange. I’m sure it wasn’t glamourous, but it certainly isn’t what we would think of these days.

In 1969, Canada enacted the Criminal Law Amendment Act, 1968–69, which decriminalized private and consensual homosexual activities between adults aged 21 and over.

In 1893, the gross indecency rule became part of the country’s first Criminal Code. The original language of the law referred only to homosexual acts between men, as sex between women was typically ignored at the time.

Health Care for New Jersey's LGBTQIA+ Community

At Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, we are consecrated to meeting the diverse health care needs of our community. The LGBTQIA+ Program is part of our initiative to provide quality tend to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual community. Our hospitals and medical centers are welcoming, inclusive environments, with physicians and staff dedicated in their pledge to equitably help the needs of the LGBTQIA+ population.

Nationally Established Diversity Programs

We recognize the serious challenges facing LGBTQIA+ youth and adults, and stand in support of diversity and inclusion for all. Our program services includes policies intended to eliminate the disparities in care LGBTQIA+ patients often face when seeking medical care. We have been awarded the Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equalityrecognition by the Human Rights Campaign Foundationfive consecutive times. This requires us to see certain criteria:
  • Upholding an explicit patient non-discrimination policy
  • Instituting an equal visitation policy for LGBTQIA+ couples
  • Maintaining an employment non-discriminatio
