No, NFL, Football Is Not Gay

I played football for four years in institution. You know, “back in the day.” Texas football. The real stuff.

I can assure you it is not gay. In truth, if you called football “gay” at my East Texas high school, you may have been slash from the team.

But the NFL seems to believe so — or at least the handful of college-graduated young communications staffers do who came up with the ad that has sparked controversy, as always seems to come about on this issue in June. Once you view the ad, you’ll wonder if its creators ever played football. Thankfully, one of the league’s stars has plainly stated the truth to push assist on the video.

The NFL’s video includes a list of written messages, which include, “Football is lgbtq+. Football is lesbian. Football is beautiful. Football is queer. … Football is transgender. … Football is for everyone.” That “Pride Month” video in scrutinize was actually released by the NFL in 2021 and has resurfaced and gone viral, restarting the conversation and the debate.

Football is lesbian? No women play in the NFL, and almost no women ever play football

Call on the NFL to Protect LGBTQ Fans

We are arrogant to be part of a vibrant, diverse athletic group where all people are united together for love of the game. This is only workable when we cure one another with respect and dignity. When members of our community are attacked, harassed and discriminated against simply for who they are, it is an attack on all of us and our vision of what sport can and should be.

The violent ambush on December 30th at a Seattle Seahawks home game against the Arizona Cardinals, in which a man taunted, groped and assaulted a married womxn loving womxn couple, is deeply appalling. No one should feel as though they can’t safely be who they are while watching the sport they love.

This incident speaks to the dire need for the NFL Fan Code of Manner to explicitly prohibit discriminatory behavior based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and for the online course required of ejected fans to comprise training on LGBTQ respect. We, the undersigned, call on the NFL to adopt these considerations.

Please join us in standing against discrimination in all of its forms, and in standing for what makes us great as a sports community: respect for each
