LGBTQ
Acronym for lesbian, same-sex attracted, bisexual, transgender, and queer. The Q generally stands for queer when LGBTQ organizations, leaders, and media use the acronym. In settings offering support for youth, it can also stand for questioning. LGBT and LGBTQ+ are also used, with the + added in recognition of all non-straight, non-cisgender identities. LGBTQ+ people have always existed, even if the language seems new. Conversations around sexual orientation and gender are nuanced -- and the "alphabet," if you will, is expanding.
"L" stands for Lesbian: A woman emotionally, romantically or sexually attracted to other women.
"G" stands for Gay: Used to describe men attracted to the matching sex OR anyone attracted to the same or similar genders.
"B" stands for Bisexual: People attracted to more than one gender.
"T" stands for Transgender: Those whose gender culture and/or expression differs from cultural expectations. Being non-binary does not imply any specific sexual orientation. Some non-binary people identify as trans, while others act not.
"Q" has two meanings. First, queer, a catch-all to include those who do not identify as exclusively straight and/or folks who have non-binary or gender-fluid identities. Queer was once used as a slur but has been reclaimed by some in the community. "Q" can also stand for those, questioning their identity.

October is LGBT History Month. Or, as some might tell, LGBTQ History Month. Or even LGBTQIA+ History Month.
The terms for the group of people that encompasses people who are woman loving woman, gay, bisexual, transgender, gay, intersex, and asexual are as broad as that community itself: As society’s understanding, recognition, and inclusion of diverse sexual identities and gender expressions has grown, so has its acronym.

How lesbianism got its name
Out of all the letters in the acronym LGBTQ, the L was the first to come into existence. For centuries, the word had been related with the works of Sappho, an ancient Greek woman from the island of Lesbos who wrote poems about same-gender passion.
The oldest use of the term to describe same-gender love has been traced back to the 17th century. But its contemporary use emerged in the 1890s, when it was used in an English-language medical dictionary and a variety of books on psychology and sexuality. Over time, it grew in popularity and was

Studies have revealed that 30% of youth in foster care identify as Gay, and 5% identify as transgender.
Many of these children and youth come from families that could not or would not provide a safe and welcoming environment. Furthermore, many kids don't come out as identifying as LGBTQ because they're worried about facing harassment and violence.

You've probably heard the initialism of LGBT or LGBTQ before. You might not know what it means or why it keeps getting longer. The entire version is LGBTQIA+, but it's only recently that it was expanded. Even among the LGBTQ group, some people use LGBT or LGBT+.

LGBTQI is an umbrella term for lesbian, gay, double attraction, transgender and lgbtq+ people.
The L, G, and B mention to sexual orientation, who a person feels romantically and/or sexually attracted to.
The T refers to gender identity and expression.
Q refers to queer in relation to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, or relationships and sexual apply, but it also represents a critical view of existing norms.
I refers to intersex, which is an umbrella designation used for a variety of experiences in which a person is born with, or develops, a reproductive or sexual anatomy that does not fit the typical definitions of female or male. An intersex person may distinguish as female, male, or neither.
The first time that the acronym, LGBT (hbt), was used in print in Sweden was in 2000 in RFSL’s member magazine, Kom Ut – the purpose was to broaden terms such as gay and homosexual.
