I’m crafting these definitions with help from queer archives, pop customs, interviews, and more. Retain in mind that terminology — especially when it comes to sex — varies widely across communities, and no single definition or article can encapsulate every individual’s experience with these terms. The terms top and bottom emerged as descriptors of a sexual binary in the homosexual leather culture of the 1950s and the bondage and sadomasochism (BDSM) identity of the 1960s.
