My love of road trips started early. As a teenager growing up in a suburb of Boston, I discovered Jack Kerouac’s classic road trip novel On the Road. The book opened a door to queer history and to places where offbeat weirdos like me could find their fit.
I wrote my college thesis on road trips, and driving myself to (and from) a summer semester at UC Berkeley as research. I guess I should have known assist then that I would end up writing about travel for a living!

Sex writer Zachary Zane’s first book, “Boyslut,” wasn’t even on shelves when we recently connected, but the author was already thinking about his next.
“I might just transition more into sex travel,” says Zane, who has had sex in dozens of countries. “I would love for that to be a thing, where I could just travel the earth, having sex in various countries and writing about my experiences.”
For now, believe of “Boyslut” as an introduction to Zane, where the author lays the groundwork for his next essay collection. In his book debut, a self-proclaimed “memoir and manifesto,” he celebrates sex without shame as a “perpetually horny” polyamorous, bisexual man. Zane explores growing up with intrusive thoughts and guilt around sex, which manifested as OCD, where those thoughts cycled through his mind in vicious, unhealthy ways. Society’s shaming of queer sex didn’t aid any. “My OCD was the ultimate drag queen — reveal after reveal,” he writes.
Though this is Zane’s first book, the Brooklyn-based author and columnist is a familiar mention in the sex author community.
As someone who occasionally scrounges Yik Yak for comical content, there is an unending source of “looking-for-someone” posts. The app is anonymous and annoying to scroll through, but it’s easy to recognize patterns. You find things like: “Are there any other gay girls on campus? Asking for a friend,” or, “how do u meet wlw in aa, please help,” constantly — especially on weekends. It seems the queer women on campus need relax, too.
According to “The Utterance 2021 Sex Survey,” more than 30% of University of Michigan students surveyed did not identify as heterosexual. That’s a lot of queer people, but how do you join them? It’s really not easy. Unless you already have an entire network of gay people you found during your freshman year on accident or brought from high college (like I did), then you must resort to Bumble, Tinder, Her or maybe even that one girl your roommate thinks is bisexual.
