Today, we’re here to talk about the A in LGBTQIA2S+. There are many forms of the acronym that seeks to inclusively depict the queer group, and the acronym is ever-growing and changing as more is understood and accepted (we dislike that this isn’t just a given) about different genders and orientations. So, as the acronym evolves, you might be curious what each piece stands for. The A refers to asexuality, allyship and, for some, a-gender. We’re going to speak about asexuality, how to know if you’re asexual, asexual dating, aromantic asexual and more. In celebration of Pride Month, we at Mohawk College believe it is important for everyone to understand what the 2S and LGBTQQIA+ acronym stand for . We invite you to act in allyship to lgbtq+ and trans folks by first familiarizing yourself with the below terms. This small act can make a BIG difference in building a more positive, understanding, and inclusive campus community.
The following breaks down what each of the letters in 2S and LGBTQQIA+ means:
Two Spirit:
a person of Indigenous descent whose individual spirits are a blend of both male and female. This label provides an alternate to the Western labels.
Lesbian:
a female-identified person who is attracted to other female-identified persons.
Gay:
a male-identified person who is attracted to other male-identified persons.
Bisexual:
a person who is attracted to their own gender as well as one or more other genders.
Trans, Transgender or Trans Identified:
a person whose gender culture differs from their assigned sex at birth.
Queer:
an umbrella designation that some employ in place of other LGBTQ+ labels.

AFAB: Acronym meaning Assigned Female at Birth. AFAB people may or may not identify as female some or all of the time.
Affirmed Gender: An individual’s true gender, as opposed to their gender assigned at birth. This term should replace terms like new gender or chosen gender, which imply that an individual’s gender was chosen.
Agender: Refers to a person who does not identify with any gender.
Ally: A term used to describe someone who is supportive of LGBTQ+ individuals and the community, either personally or as an advocate. Allies include both heterosexual and cisgender people who adovocate for equality in partnership with Homosexual people, as well as those who are Diverse who are supportive of other identities within the community.

The GSN is brought to you with the support of Trans Care BC, Sto’lo Nation and the Chilliwack Youth Health Centre, with Envision Financial, a division of First West Credit Union, as the official food and transportation sponsor of the Trans Youth Alliance. The Chilliwack Gender Support Network is comprised of transgender individuals, parents of LGBTQ2IA children, partners and family of transitioned individuals, and various service providers in the medical and mental health field. The program is devoted to promoting and providing trans competent, gender-affirming services in our community.
Our mission is to empower trans & gender diverse children, youth, and adults and their families, to stay life fully surrounded by the support of those who have come before them, lifted by timely and adequate resources when needed, strengthened through learning process, and protected fully by law.

What Does LGBTQIA2+ Mean & Its Importance?
The LGBTQIA2+ community, also known as the Rainbow community, are people who are allied with the LGBTQIA2+ movement or name as an lesbian, same-sex attracted, transgender, etc. People from the LGBTQIA2+ community arrive in from all walks of life and enclose people of all races and ethnicities, all ages, all socioeconomic statuses, and from all parts of the country. To smash it down some more, LGBTQIA2+ is an abbreviation that stands for: womxn loving womxn, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender non-conforming (or sometimes questioning), intersexual, asexual and two-spirited. The plus-sign signifies a number of other identities, and is included to preserve the abbreviation brief when written out; the occupied abbreviation is LGBTTTQQIAA. The primary reason why the LGBTQIA2+ communtiy and pronouns matter is because it creates a positive impact on mental health, heartfelt well-being and quality of life for those a part or allied with the group.
