Today, we position on the shoulders of LGBTQ people who paved our way. Some of those people and events happened right here in Ithaca!
Bars and universal spaces have been sites of queer and transsexual resistance and resilience for decades. But many of the people and places that make up our history’s shared past hold been forgotten, erased, overlooked, or ignored. This LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans person, queer, questioning) local history tour is designed to preserve some of the rich stories and heritage of our Ithaca group. Our cisgender heterosexual allies working in solidarity possess also played prominent roles. This tour is for anyone wanting to study about our local LGBTQ history and culture.

Self-Guided LGBTQ Local History Walking Tour
Created by students of Ithaca College and Luca Maurer, director of The Center for LGBT Education Outreach & Services, The LGBTQ Local History Walking Tour showcases one of the first cities in the US to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, where one of the first student-organized sit-ins for LGBTQ rights took place, the site of one of the first public declarations of the American bisexual person movement and more. With 32 stops over seven miles, this tour is available as a self-guided experience through the free app with options for users to customize their experience.
Popular stops on the tour include the Upper Buttermilk State Park, the HIV/AIDS Memorial Daffodil Gardens, and The Gay People’s Center; attractions with incredible and compelling stories to narrate. This tour is for anyone who is interested in learning about Ithaca’s LGBTQ history and culture, to honor the past and better the future.

Six LGBTQ+ Walking Tours
The month of June is the time for celebrating Gay Pride, but it is also a time for commemorating places, people, and events in queer history. While most are notified of the Stonewall Riots in June of 1969 in New York Urban area, it was not a solitary event in the queer community's fight for equity in the U.S. The foundation for Homosexual visibility and pride was laid in many places throughout the country.

Queer history walking tours are an excellent opportunity to learn about, and thereby honor, the strength and resilience of the previous generations. These are six LGBTQ+ history walking tours that may be experienced throughout the U.S.
Detroit
Detroit Historic Pride, A Walking Tour led by urban planner Michael Boettcher, AICP, explores the history of the city's LGBTQ+ community. This tour explores the downtown spaces that welcomed the male lover community during World War II before the migration to Palmer Park, famous as "Michigan's Gayest Square Mile" in the 1950s. The tour departs on select weekend days. Registration and a fee are required.

This walking tour takes you to locations related to Ithaca's history of LGBTQ publications and shops from the 20th century.
INTRODUCTION
The gay liberation and women’s movements of the 1970s resulted in the emergence of a thriving gay and lesbian (today, LGBTQ) print culture made by and for the community. Publications developed alongside the growth of homosexual woman and gay organizations throughout the United States, the establishment of annual Homosexual Pride marches, and an increased number of people coming out. Print media was not merely a result of gay liberation. Networks of readers that formed around publications allowed LGBTQ people to erect community in ways that supported the broader movement. According to historian Benjamin Serby, “these symbolic connections, forged in text, were critical to the coalescence and growth of lgbtq+ liberation after Stonewall.”
