Michael Caine was told taking gay roles would be a ‘career killer’
He was famed for playing Hollywood’s most notorious ladies’ man in the imaginative version of Alfie.
But Michael Caine was still organism warned that people would think he was same-sex attracted if he took on a role of a different sexuality in the late seventies.
In fact, the 85-year-old says he was advised that the advance would cost him his career, despite the achievement of Alfie and The Italian Job.
In an interview with Rolling Stone this week, Michael revealed: ‘It was a bit dicey to do — people said it could be a career killer and what are the girls going to think of you?
‘A couple of people said, “Do you really want to do it, Michael? People will consider you’re gay.” I said, “No, they won’t. They know I’m an actor.”‘
And so he refused to heed the advice and became one of the first well-known actors to get on a gay role in 1978 comedy California Suite, and again in 1982 thriller Deathtrap.
Not only that, but the film luminary experienced his first touch with a man on-screen when he locked lips with Superman star Christopher Reeve.

Sir Michael Caine has shared that earlier in his career he was advised to turn down roles where he played a homosexual character.
